- Terminal drought substantially reduces chickpea yield. Reducing water use at vegetative stage by reducing transpiration under high vapor pressure deficit (VPD), i.e. under dry/hot conditions, contributes to drought adaptation. We hypothesized that this trait could relate to differences in a genotype's dependence on root water transport pathways and hydraulics.
- Transpiration rate responses in conservative and profligate chickpea genotypes were evaluated under increasing VPD in the presence/absence of apoplastic and cell‐to‐cell transport inhibitors.
- Conservative genotypes ICC 4958 and ICC 8058 restricted transpiration under high VPD compared to the profligate genotypes ICC 14799 and ICC 867. Profligate genotypes were more affected by aquaporin inhibition of the cell‐to‐cell pathway than conservative genotypes, as measured by the root hydraulic conductance and transpiration under high VPD. Aquaporin inhibitor treatment also led to a larger reduction in root hydraulic conductivity in profligate than in conservative genotypes. In contrast, blockage of the apoplastic pathway in roots decreased transpiration more in conservative than in profligate genotypes. Interestingly, conservative genotypes had high early vigour, whereas profligate genotypes had low early vigour.
- In conclusion, profligate genotypes depend more on the cell‐to‐cell pathway, which might explain their higher root hydraulic conductivity, whereas water‐saving by restricting transpiration led to higher dependence on the apoplastic pathway. This opens the possibility to screen for conservative or profligate chickpea phenotypes using inhibitors, itself opening to the search of the genetic basis of these differences.

Changes in water status, membrane permeability, ethylene production and levels of abscisic acid (ABA) were measured during senescence of cut carnation flowers ( Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. White Sim) in order to clarify the temporal sequence of physiological events during this post-harvest period. Ethylene production and ABA content of the petal tissue rose essentially in parallel during natural senescence and after treatment of young flowers with exogenous ethylene, indicating that their syntheses are not widely separated in time. However, solute leakage, reflecting membrane deterioration, was apparent well before the natural rise in ethylene and ABA had begun. In addition, there were marked changes in water status of the tissue, including losses in water potential (ψw ), and turgor (ψp ), that preceded the rise in ABA and ethylene. As senescence progressed, ψw continued to decline, but ψp returned to normal levels. These temporal relationships were less well resolved when senescence of young flowers was induced by treatment with ethylene, presumably because the time-scale had been shortened. Thus changes in membrane permeability and an associated water stress in petal tissue appear to be earlier symptoms of flower senescence than the rises in ABA or ethylene. These observations support the contention that the climacteric-like rise in ethylene production is not the initial or primary event of senescence and that the rise in ABA titre may simply be a response to changes in water status. 相似文献

The effects of food and water deprivation on survival and reproduction of adult female German cockroaches were examined. Females, maintained under constant conditions, were deprived of food or water following adult maturation, mating, during the oothecal incubation period, and after first oothecal hatch. It was found that both food and water deprivations caused increased mortality, delays in the reproductive cycle and decreased oothecal hatch. The relative importance of food vs. water deprivation on reproduction is discussed along with possible reproductive strategies for this species.

It is known that the negatively stained preparations of inner mitochondrial membrane display characteristic ∼9 nmF
1 (ATPase) knobs projecting from the matrix surface. Freeze-etch studies have reported the absence of such knobs from the “etched”
surface of the inner mitochondrial membranes. We have demonstrated their presence on the surface of SMP (submitochondrial
particles) prepared by freeze-drying for transmission electron microscopy. This identification has been substantiated by comparison
with the freeze-dried TU particles (trypsin-urea treated SMP) that are devoid ofF

When severely dehydrated Bedouin goats were allowed to drink to satiation their plasma arginine vasopressin concentration
immediately dropped from a value of 19.9±9.4 pmol·l-1 to 9.4±3.9 pmol·l-1 (P<0.05). It continued to drop further until a concentration of 1.8±2.9 pmol·l-1 was recorded, similar to that reported for goats allowed to drink freely. When the goats were shown the water but drinking
was denied, plasma arginine vasopressin immediately dropped to 11.7±4.0 pmol·l-1 (P<0.05) and further decreased to 10.0±4.8 pmol·l-1 5 min following their sighting the water. This level, however, was not sustained and 2 h after the initial drop the high
pre-trial concentration of plasma arginine vasopression was regained. Presumably, sighting of water by dehydrated goats induces
an abrupt drop in their plasma arginine vasopressin level even before drinking commences. When rehydrated, by introducing
water directly to the rumen, circumventing both the sensing of the water and the drinking proper, no immediate drop in the
plasma arginine vasopression concentration of the newly rehydrated goats was observed. A delayed drop in the plasma arginine
vasopressin levels took place slowly, concurrently with the drop in osmolality and concentration of Na+ in the plasma. It is suggested that sighting of water by dehydrated goats is involved in the modulation of plasma arginine

Long-column laboratory tests were performed to validate improvements to the MOFAT program for simulating LNAPL displacement and entrapment in response to a fluctuating water table. The long-column tests consisted of a fluctuating water table and its subsequent displacement and entrapment of an LNAPL. The modifications of MOFAT include a linear LNAPL trapping estimate and a new scaling technique for the inhibition portion of the fluctuation (water table rise). Improved prediction of the LNAPL trapping was obtained by assuming the amount of LNAPL that is trapped by a rising water table is proportional to the antecedent water content of the porous medium. The pressure-saturation relationship for the air-water drainage system was scaled to estimate the LNAPL-water and air-LNAPL drainage relationships. Scaled inhibition pressure-saturation relationships are improved by incorporating a correction for contact angle hysteresis and surface roughness. The incorporation of these changes into MOFAT led to noticable improvements in the numerical simulation of the experimental data. 相似文献

State of the art and research needs for the impact category eutrophication are discussed. Eutrophication is a difficult impact
category because it includes emissions to both air and water — both subject to different environmental mechanisms — as well
as impacts occurring in different types of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The possible fate processes are complex and
include transportation between different ecosystems. In some recent approaches, transportation modelling of air emissions
has been included. However, in general, the used characterisation methods do not integrate fate modelling, which is a limitation.
The definition of the impact indicator needs further research, too. The inclusion of other nutrients than those typically

Oxidation of guanine in DNA can lead to mutagenic lesions such as 7-hydro-8-oxoguanine (oG). Upon further oxidation, a more mutagenic lesion, spirominodihydantoin (Sp), can occur. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations were performed to determine the structural features of DNA primer-template models with 5′-GG, 5′-G(oG), 5′-G(Sp) and 5′-T(Sp) templates, that mimic the situation in which the downstream G of the template has been oxidized to oG or hyperoxidized to Sp. Our results show that misalignment occurs only in the 5′-G(Sp) and 5′-T(Sp) templates, providing structural insights into the observed differences in mutagenicity of Sp and oG during DNA replication. 相似文献
